What we make

Two lengths, and the conventions built on them

A lab coat is a simple garment with one important variable: how far down it falls. We make the standard length, which finishes around the hip and is the everyday ward and clinic coat, and the long length, which falls below the knee and is asked for where more coverage or more formality is wanted.

In many teaching hospitals the length is the grade: students in the shorter coat, consultants and senior staff in the full-length one. We build to whichever convention your institution already runs. We do not impose a house naming system on you, and we do not sell a coat under a model name that means nothing outside our own catalogue.

Style options

Single-breasted front with buttons or press studs. Notched or mandarin collar. Chest pocket with lower patch pockets, or the pocket plan from your own drawing. Back belt, half-belt or plain back. Side vents so a coat worn over scrubs still gives access to trouser pockets. Long sleeve as standard, short sleeve where local practice calls for it, plain or cuffed.

Fabric & finish

What wrinkle resistance means in a lab coat

A lab coat is sat in, pushed up at the sleeve, folded over a forearm, hung on the back of a chair and pulled out of a locker. Cotton on its own creases under all of that and then holds the crease, which is why an unfinished cotton coat looks slept in by the afternoon round, however clean it actually is.

Wrinkle resistance is the cloth's ability to recover its flat shape after being crushed. It comes from two things working together, and a coat that only has one of them will disappoint you.

The blend

Polyester is elastic at the fibre level: deform it and it springs back. Cotton is not. A blend that leans on polyester recovers from creasing on its own, holds its colour through repeated laundering, and dries faster. Push the blend the other way and you gain breathability and hand feel and lose crease recovery. That trade is the whole decision, and it belongs to you, not to us.

The finish

An easy-care finish is applied to the cloth at the mill and works on the cotton component, helping the fibre return to shape rather than setting into a fold. Its practical effect is that a coat can come out of a tumble dryer, go on a hanger and go back on shift without a pressing step.

Why hospitals ask for it

Two reasons, and only one of them is about appearance. The visible one is that the coat is a uniform, and patients read a uniform as a signal about the institution behind it. The one that shows up in the budget is pressing: it is among the most labour-intensive stages in any institutional laundry, and a coat that does not need it changes the cost of keeping the garment in service.

What we do not claim

We describe these coats as wrinkle resistant because that is what they are built to be: a blend and a finish chosen so the cloth recovers from creasing. We do not publish a crease-recovery angle, a wash-cycle rating or a test certificate for them, and we would treat any supplier who publishes one without naming the test house and the method with some caution. We make no antimicrobial, fluid-barrier or flame-retardant claim for these garments. The honest test is your own laundry, and the specification is fixed on an approved sample before anything goes into bulk.

Sizing & fit

Fit is chest, sleeve and length: graded separately

A coat is sized on the chest, but two people with the same chest measurement rarely want the same sleeve or the same finished length. Grading those three independently is the difference between a coat that is worn and a coat that lives in a cupboard.

Coats are worn over other clothing: scrubs, a shirt and tie, a jumper in winter, so the ease allowance is specified deliberately rather than inherited from a shirt block. Tell us what goes underneath and we will cut for it.

We publish no standard size run. The run is built from your headcount by size, or from a fitting set worn across the range, and it is printed on your own specification sheet so every repeat order reproduces it.

  • Size run: On request. Built from your headcount or a fitting set.
  • Lengths: standard and long; finished length by size confirmed at sampling.
  • Sleeve: long or short; plain or cuffed.
  • Cut: unisex block, or separate men's and women's blocks with shaped side seams.
  • Ease: specified for what is worn underneath, not assumed.
  • Grading: body measurements and tolerances agreed on the approved sample before bulk.
  • Marking: size marked on the neck label to your convention.

Branding & embroidery

Your crest, your label, your reputation

Your brand deserves fabrics that reflect precision, consistency and uncompromised quality. At Paragon, every thread is designed to uphold your reputation, not just ours.

Chest embroidery

The institution crest or wordmark sits at the left chest, above the pocket. A second line carries the wearer's name and role where coats are issued individually, and a third can carry the department. Placement, stitch size and thread colour are confirmed against an approved stitch-out, so the coat delivered in your third order sits identically to the one in your first.

Labels

A woven satin label at the neck carries your name; a printed label carries size, composition and care instructions. On private-label and distributor orders your label replaces ours completely. There is no Paragon marking on the garment, the polybag or the carton unless you ask for it.

Colour and trim

White and cream from stock. Other shades matched to a Pantone reference on order, which matters more than it sounds, because a department that colour-codes its coats needs the same shade three orders from now, and a swatch name will not get you there.

Contrast piping at the collar or pocket, contrast buttons, and coloured trim to separate grades or departments without changing the coat itself.

Private label

We manufacture under distributors' and uniform brands' own labels as well as our own. If you are buying to resell, the branding, the packing and the marking are yours from the first carton. Custom manufacturing.

Recommended care for this fabric typeWarm wash with like colours. Tumble dry low and hang immediately to let the finish recover. Cool iron only if required. Generic guidance for a poly-cotton blend, not a tested Paragon result.

At Paragon Textile, production is guided by defined protocols, quality controls and measurable benchmarks. Our processes are structured to meet international sourcing and compliance requirements. Fabric, finish, fit and branding are fixed on an approved sample before bulk, and that approved sample is what every repeat order is made against.
