GSM is a good number: objective, cheap to verify, and tied to the two things a housekeeping operation cares about: how much water a towel takes up, and how it presents on the rail. It is also quoted without the details that give it meaning, which is how two suppliers quote “550 GSM” for two visibly different towels.
What GSM actually measures
GSM is grams per square metre, the mass of one square metre of finished cloth. It is not thickness, not pile height, not a grade and not a quality mark.
On a terry towel that mass is split between two structures. The ground weave is the base cloth that carries the strength and keeps the piece rectangular. The pile is the field of loops standing off that ground, and the loops do almost all of the absorbing. The pile is usually the larger share of the mass, which is why GSM tracks absorbent capacity reasonably well, and tracks drying time, tumbler loading and laundry cost just as closely. Every gram specified is a gram the laundry dries several times a week.
The GSM ladder, end use by end use

Why hand towels and washcloths are specified lower
Hand towels and washcloths are typically specified 100 to 150 GSM below the bath towel they are matched to, and that is deliberate, not a saving.
- Handling. A small piece at bath-towel mass is stiff: it will not fold cleanly or sit flat on a shelf, and reads as board rather than cloth.
- Recovery. Hand towels are used for seconds at a time, many times a day. A lighter piece gives its water back between uses instead of sitting damp on the ring.
- Cost per use. Small pieces are the highest-frequency items in the laundry, so mass added to them is multiplied by a far higher wash count.
Matching a set does not mean matching its GSM. It means the same yarn, shade, border and finish across every piece, at the mass that suits each one.
Bath mats are not heavy towels
At 800 GSM and above the requirement has changed. A mat has to stay flat, stay put, hold a large volume of water without letting it reach the floor, and be walked on while wet. That means a dense ground and a short, tightly set pile, usually with a jacquard motif or border woven in rather than printed on. Mats are also washed on a separate cycle, so their mass is not competing with the room load.
The honest guardrail: roughly 500 to 750
Below roughly 500 GSM a guest reads the towel as thin. The judgement is made in the first second, by hand, and no amount of fibre quality argues them out of it.
Above roughly 750 GSM the trade runs the other way: drying time in an industrial tumbler climbs, the trolley and the linen shelf hold fewer pieces, and cost per wash rises, while the guest cannot tell you the towel improved. Most hotel programmes therefore land the bath towel between 500 and 650 and spend the rest of the budget on yarn and construction. Spa and treatment areas are where the upper end earns its place, because there the towel is part of the service.

Two towels at the same GSM, two different products
GSM is a total. Totals can be reached in more than one way, and this is where identical numbers stop meaning identical goods.
Pile height against pile density
You can arrive at 550 GSM with a tall, loosely set pile or a short, densely set one. The tall pile feels plusher and flattens sooner under pressure; the dense pile feels firmer, presents a more even face and gives up its water faster in the tumbler. Neither is wrong, but sample one and take delivery of the other, and the GSM on the docket will agree with you while the housekeeper does not.
Yarn, spinning and twist
Staple length, spinning method and twist govern hand more than mass does. Combed, ring-spun, low-twist cotton feels softer at 500 GSM than a high-twist carded yarn at 600, and it opens up and takes water faster. Ply behaves the same way at the same total mass.
How GSM is measured, and the tolerance to write down
GSM is determined by ASTM D3776, the standard test method for mass per unit area of fabric: specimens of known area are cut, conditioned and weighed. It is taken on finished cloth, not greige fabric off the loom, because dyeing, softening and shearing all move the figure.
A tolerance of about ±5% is a normal commercial convention on woven terry, and it belongs in your document: write “550 GSM ±5%”, not “550 GSM”. Nominal and measured mass are never identical across a run, and stating the tolerance turns a dispute into an arithmetic check. Put the finished piece size on the same line, the piece weight your laundry is costed on is GSM multiplied by area.
What to do with all of this
Nominal GSM with its tolerance, the construction, the yarn, the finished size per piece: put those four lines on paper and any competent mill can quote the towel you have in mind. Leave one out and you are comparing prices, not products.
